Our Favorite Coffee Tips

Whether you’re trying to cut down on costs or just trying to avoid people (hey, we get it), you may be trying to do a little more home brewing for your coffee lately.

For some of our favorite at-home coffee tips as well as our favorite deals to keep you caffeinated on the cheap, you’ve come to the right place!

Get Light Roast For The Biggest Boost

Have you ever wondered which coffee roast has the most caffeine? Depending on how you measure your coffee, one roast may come out on top. The average at-home coffee lover measures their coffee by volume. And by volume, light roasts have more caffeine per cup.

When beans go through the roasting process, they lose some water and density. The longer they are roasted to create a darker roast, the more density is lost, creating smaller beans. So if you were to weigh the grounds for each pot you brew, darker roasts may beat out the lighter roasts.

Bottom line, if you’re an at-home coffee drinker scooping your coffee grounds like the rest of us, reach for the light roast Breakfast Blend and enjoy the jolt!

Keep Your Cold Brew Strong with Iced Coffee Cubes

iced coffee cubes

Do you drink your coffee iced even when the temperatures drop below freezing? So do we! The biggest problem with iced coffee when you try to brew it at home is diluting it with melted ice.

Try brewing some regular strength coffee and then pouring it into ice cube trays after it’s cooled. Freeze the cubes and use those for your iced coffee to enjoy a perfect cold brew without the melted ice watering it down.

Using Coffee Grounds for Compost and Fertilizer

coffee grounds in compost

When I worked at Starbucks, we used to bag up the used coffee grounds from our espresso machines, and avid gardeners would come and take them to use for compost and fertilizer in their gardens.

To use coffee in your compost pile, just throw your used coffee grounds (and the filters too!) on your compost to add nitrogen and green compost material to your pile.

You can also sprinkle used coffee grounds directly on your plants as a fertilizer. This will help with drainage, water retention, and aeration.

How to Make Pour Over With Household Items

pour over coffee at home

The technique of pour over coffee tends to highlight complex flavors when compared to traditional brewing. Using this method allows you to control the temperature, strength, texture, and flavor of your coffee.

To enjoy the perks of pour over coffee with household items, you just need some basics: freshly ground coffee, hot water, a filter, steady hands, and a cup for drinking.

Using butterfly clips or paper clips, secure your filter to the sides of your mug. If you don’t have a coffee filter you can use a cheesecloth or fabric napkin to achieve the same results.

Add your freshly ground coffee to your filter and pour hot water into the grounds, allowing it to bloom for about 30 seconds. Add more water to the top of the filter and then continue to pour water every 30 seconds or so until your cup is full.

Check out this article for more at-home pour over tips.

If you end up loving pour over coffee and want to invest in a great pour over coffee maker, Chemex is a highly reviewed and customer-loved brand. Their 3-cup coffee maker is under $40 at Amazon.

How to Repurpose Coffee Pods

coffee pods from nespresso

If you’re a coffee pod addict and find yourself going through multiple K-cups every day, you might be wondering how you can recycle these little babies to do your part in helping the environment.

Your best bet is to consider shopping for compostable coffee pod brands, using a reusable coffee pod, or shopping brands like Nespresso that offer a coffee pod recycling program.

Another option is to get crafty and try repurposing used K-cups. We love this list of ways to re-use Keurig K-Cups that includes things like:

  • Sensory toys for toddlers
  • Holders for playing cards
  • Christmas bell ornaments
  • Dollhouse accessories

Cut Coffee Bitterness with Salt (or Butter!)

coffee in a cup with saucer

Another tip for coffee drinkers who might love the boost but not the flavor is to add some salt. Salt neutralizes the bitter flavor in coffee and can also bring out some of its sweetness and other nuanced flavors.

How much to add? According to Alton Brown, add 1/4 teaspoon to 6 tablespoons of ground coffee.

Another tip? Add salted butter to your coffee. This enhances the flavor and cuts the bitterness the way salt does, but it also provides some added fat and richness to your coffee which can help some people avoid the jitters.

How to Brew Espresso in Your French Press

french press espresso

You don’t need to spend hundreds on a fancy espresso machine to have delicious coffee drinks at home. An affordable alternative is making espresso in a french press. Bodum, one of my favorite coffee accessory brands, has a well-rated 34 oz. french press on Amazon for just under $35.

Just add 2 tablespoons of medium-ground espresso beans to your french press with one cup of hot water and steep for four minutes. Press the plunger down and enjoy a hot espresso.

You can also get an inexpensive milk frother for a creamy, homemade latte experience!

5 Expert Tips for Finding Cheap North Face Jackets on Sale

5 Expert Tips for Finding Cheap North Face Jackets on Sale

It’s a law as constant as gravity that states laziness is the bane of online shopping. A friend of mine recently let his sloth get the best of him when shopping for a new North Face TriClimate Jacket. In his impatience, he bought it for $200 when he clearly could’ve gotten it for less than $150, if only he knew where to shop. Keep reading to see where you can find cheap North Face jackets.

So you’re here, clearly because you love North Face, and who doesn’t? There’s a reason North Face tops the charts as the most popular outerwear brand on the planet–their gear is effective, built to last, and aesthetically pleasing. Plus, the name North Face is just cool as heck. But that’s neither here nor there; you want the cheat codes. Here are a few rules that guarantee you will find the best price, period, for your new North Face jacket.

Know the Outliers

north face yellow coat

To be sure, there are countless reputable stores that offer quality prices on North Face; however, over the past season we’ve noticed a handful in particular that really go above and beyond:

Proozy, for instance, provides exclusive prices on some of the most popular styles. It isn’t uncommon to see top-tier jackets drop below $50 at Proozy via Brad’s Deals.

Alternately, Cabela’s is famous for its Bargain Bin. Not only can you find excellent prices for North Face, but you will also discover a litany of outdoorsy brands up to 65% off. Sunny Sports also has a stellar sales section with around 200 deeply discounted styles. This is not to diss great bets like Backcountry and Moosejaw – but we can’t in good faith show you the way to North Face heaven without mentioning Proozy, Cabela’s, and Sunny Sports.

Use Google Shopping

Google search result of North Face jackets

If you know the exact style you want, there is perhaps no better way to cut through the jungles of web retail and get straight to the point. Simply go to Google Shopping (the tab right next to Google Images) and enter the name. For example, if you search ‘North Face Canyonwall Jacket’, dozens of store results will appear. The first store is usually the best price.

In the above example, Zappos has the lowest price for the Canyonwall Jacket at $69; the next best price is $75. Boom — you just saved yourself $6. Just make sure we aren’t offering an exclusive price on the same jacket you’re looking for, because Brad’s prices won’t show up in Google Shopping.

Look for Surprises at Sporting Goods Stores

We suggest hitting sporting goods stores like Finish Line, Eastbay, and Dick’s Sporting Goods for the occasional diamond in the rough. In spring and summer, we saw Finish Line sell the popular North Face ThermoBall Jacket for $49, which is almost unheard of. Since North Face isn’t their normal forte, sports retailers sometimes drop the price extremely low to catch the eye of folks shopping for, say, a Nike shoe or a bike.

You might also want to look for buy-more-save-more codes like the regular 20% off orders of $99 at Eastbay. This would knock the price of an expensive North Face jacket down at least $20. We also suggest you peruse Academy Sports and Dick’s Sporting Goods for excellent prices on hoodies.

Buy Out of Season

A bit of sage shopping advice: Out-of-season items usually sell for less. It only makes sense. Retailers want to get rid of the old inventory to make room for new styles. While it may make sense that November and December would offer the best sales on North Face, considering Black Friday and Cyber Monday, after-winter sales are often a goldmine. Neglected stock must go! As an example, The North Face’s official website has an End of Season clearance sale reserved for past-season styles. To find great deals, a little patience might be just the ticket.

Set Up a Brad’s Deals Alert

deal alert for the north face

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could receive a notification on your phone alerting you to the best North Face prices on the web? Too good to be true? Think again. In 2017, Brad’s Deals came out with Brad’s Alerts, which pings you whenever your preferred brand or product goes live on our site. You can get constant updates of the best North Face deals from all across the retail world. All you have to do is visit our Deal Alerts page and enter the term ‘north face’ and you will get emails whenever one of our deal editors posts a North Face deal.

We can’t get enough of North Face, so you will undoubtedly have a full lineup of great deals sent to you daily.

What’s a brand you would like to see us share some expert tips for getting a deal on? Let us know in the comments and you just might see a blog post soon!

6 Expert Tips to Get Deals on Peloton and Other Fitness Equipment

6 Expert Tips to Get Deals on Peloton and Other Fitness Equipment

We see tons of fitness equipment go on sale during the month of January. People are feeling sluggish after the holidays and motivated to start amping up their fitness routines for the new year. There are sales on everything from yoga mats to water bottles. But what about the rarely discounted items? Like deals on Peloton? How do you save money on expensive fitness equipment? Our deal experts share their top money-saving tips!

We know anyone can go out and find a cheap weight set during January fitness sales. But for those of us wanting to buy quality fitness equipment that will last and be used more than just one month, finding deals can be a little trickier.

Our deal editors share some of their tips for getting the best deals on fitness equipment. See six money-saving tips below and let us know if you have any tips to share.

In This Post

  1. Research Loyalty and Referral Programs
  2. Check for Credit Card Offers
  3. Buy Digital Subscriptions for Your Own Equipment
  4. Shop Outside the US
  5. Consider Alternative Brands
  6. Utilize Employer and Insurance Perks

Research Loyalty and Referral Programs

friends and family fitness referalls

If you’re purchasing a larger piece of fitness equipment that rarely goes on sale, check to see if they offer any referral programs. If your friends or family are interested in the same brand of equipment, some brands will give them a discount and you a promotional credit for the purchase.

Peloton is a great example. They rarely offer discounts, but they do offer $100 off for your friends and family plus a $100 purchase credit to you for referring them. Echelon, another at-home exercise bike, offers the same referral promotion.

Check for Credit Card Offers

credit card fitness perks

Some credit cards have partnerships with fitness brands and you can get discounts or account credits for purchases with those brands using your credit card.

Peloton is yet again a good example. Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders can get 10x the points on the purchase of a Peloton Bike or Peloton Tread and up to $120 back on your Peloton All-Access Membership or Peloton App Membership. Sapphire Preferred holders get 5x points and up to $60 back.

American Express Platinum cardholders had a similar offer to receive a $300 statement credit with the purchase of a SoulCycle at-home bike. While that offer seems to have expired, they are offering up to $300 back each year on Equinox and Equinox+ memberships.

Buy Digital Subscriptions for Your Own Equipment

fitness couple using deals on digital fitness content at home

This is something a lot of our deal editors do. You can purchase Peloton’s digital content and use it with your own stationary bike or treadmill. Or, purchase the Equinox subscription without the SoulCycle at-home bike. You get the picture.

The key here would be to buy a quality cadence sensor that would allow you to track similar training and fitness metrics that Peloton users love. Some trusted brands for sensors are Wahoo and Magene. You can find quality options for both of these brands for $40-$70.

Our deal editor Mike is an avid cyclist. He notes that if you are going to use your own bike with the Peloton digital content, you may want to invest in a smart trainer. Which, though pricey, is still a fraction of the cost of a Peloton bike.

His pick for the best smart trainer to use with Peloton is the Wahoo Kickr Snap: “It’s compatible with almost any bike. Even kids’ bikes. And it’s a smart trainer so it can simulate hills and you can pair it with almost any fitness app or fitness tracker. It’s $500, but regularly drops to $400-450.” This is still about $2,000 less than the Peloton bike itself.

Shop Outside the US

shopping online

Sometimes broadening your retailer search can help you save hundreds. Mike purchased an Elite Direto XR trainer which is normally $800. By purchasing it from a UK seller, ProBikeKit, he was able to get it for $683 with free international shipping during a New Year promotion. He purchased it from the UK because cycling is more popular there and competitive pricing drives the retail price down.

Don’t be afraid to research sellers you haven’t heard of when purchasing fitness equipment. But the key here is research. Check their social media pages. Test their customer service contact numbers and emails. Scrutinize review sites and Google them until you feel confident that they’re safe. If you’re ever hesitant, reach out to us on Facebook and we’ll help you research.

Consider Alternative Fitness Brands

woman using alternative fitness equipment brands

Tom is another one of our editors and a fitness fanatic. His best tip for finding sales on fitness equipment is to shop for alternatives to popular brands. While at the gym, he had some favorite equipment, like the TRX HOME2 Suspension Trainer™ and the Rogue 3 in 1 Wood Plyo Box

By doing a little research and testing he was able to find nearly the exact same products for much less.

The QD Bodyweight Resistance Straps Training Kit is only $39.99 compared to the TRX Suspension Kit mentioned above, which is $199.95. And he also found this Wood Plyometric Box from Woot for $71.70, compared to the Rogue version which costs $125.

Utilize Employer and Insurance Perks

employee paycheck fitness benefits

Many employers, especially with work from home becoming more popular, offer perks through insurance that cover some fitness costs. Check with your employer and insurance benefits to see if you can get reimbursed for at-home fitness purchases.

At Brad’s Deals, we receive $20 each month towards gym memberships or at-home fitness. Our managing editor Casey uses this towards her Supernatural VR fitness subscription.

If your employer already offers a discount or credit towards a gym membership, it may be worth asking if they would consider also crediting at-home fitness costs.

These are a few of the best ways to save on fitness equipment. Do you have any tips to add to our list? Let us know in the comments!
