What Does Travel Look Like in 2021?

What Does Travel Look Like in 2021?

It’s 2021, and we’re still deep in the pandemic caused by COVID-19. All industries have been affected, but arguably none more so than the travel industry. With a new administration in charge in the US, policies for travelers that were in place in 2020 may be changing. If you’re like many other Americans wondering when it will be safe to travel again and what the travel requirements may be in 2021, this post is for you!

What Does Travel Look Like in 2021?

  1. How To Travel Safely in 2021
  2. Wear a Mask
  3. Check Travel Restrictions
  4. Travel Safely While At Your Destination
  5. Be Flexible
  6. Vaccine Addendum

How To Travel Safely in 2021

airplane
If we are able to travel again in 2021, there are some tips to do so safely. With all of the safety protocols put in place today, you are much better off doing your research and learning the safety measures at both your departing airport and your destination. You don’t want to miss your flight or have your trip ruined because you were not well-informed of all safety protocols.

Wear a Mask

airport mask
Up until January 20th, wearing a mask for interstate travel was only “recommended” by the federal government, with companies like American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, and Southwest Airlines requiring them to travel on their planes. By executive order, masks are now required for all interstate travel, including airlines, trains, ferries, and bus travel. This is a great step forward to keep everyone safe during travel and reduce the difficulty in enforcing the official policy for airline workers, who have seen an uptick in aggressive passengers during the pandemic.

Check Travel Restrictions

airport
If you’re traveling domestically or internationally, your destination may have restrictions or entry requirements for travelers. For example, many cities and states around the US have mandatory quarantine requirements for out of state travelers visiting or returning to their state. AARP has published a nice guide detailing state-by-state the requirements.

For leisure travelers domestically, it’s important to note that Alaska and Hawaii are requiring a negative COVID-19 PCR test 72 hours or less before travel (and some islands in Hawaii featuring even more strict entry requirements, like required “resort bubble” quarantines).

If you’re traveling internationally, know that starting January 26th, 2021, a negative COVID test (PCR or antigen) will be required to board a plane back to the US. President Biden also mentioned a required quarantine upon returning from international travel, but details aren’t known at this time.

Your international travel destination may also have special entry requirements that require special consideration. Some countries, like Mexico, Turkey, and the Dominican Republic, are not currently requiring a negative COVID test for entry. Most others still open for travel do. Other countries, like Japan, are still closed to tourism. Check the U.S. State Department‘s website for your specific country’s requirements.

Travel Safely While At Your Destination

golden gate tourists
Once you arrive at your destination, familiarize yourself with the new laws and requirements due to COVID-19. If you’re traveling to a place like Walt Disney World, you’ll be required to wear a mask when not eating or drinking for your entire day in the parks. Hotel chains have also required masks in public areas in all their hotels. When in doubt, err on the side of caution, and wear a mask and maintain social distancing from other guests or visitors. Choose activities that are safe during a pandemic (outdoor sports like golf are a great option). Avoid crowded situations like indoor dining, if that is still allowed at your destination.

Be Flexible

calendar
With new vaccines, new variants, and a new administration, requirements can change for travel in an instant. It’s important to be flexible with your travel plans, and even being willing to cancel your trip outright, if new changes to policies affect your trip. Luckily, airlines and hotels have eliminated change fees, made cancellations easier, and understand the situation all of us are in. Refer closely to any cancellation policy for your specific reservation.

Vaccines

It’s too early to say how the world will deal with the vaccine once it’s rolled out more broadly. Questions like if masks will still be required, if testing will still go on, and if border restrictions for your country of interest will be lifted will remain unanswered for many more weeks (or months). If you have access to the vaccine at this time, make sure to keep your immunization cards in a safe place, as they’ll be required for either proof of vaccination in the future (much like yellow fever is treated now by some countries) or for a digital “vaccine passport” that is now being proposed by the Biden Administration.

As always, things may change. We’ll update our post with new and up to date information as needed.

The Best Place To Buy A TV Online

The Best Place To Buy A TV Online

As we get closer to the big game for football fans, the sales on TVs will start getting pretty strong. This year we’ve seen more TV discounts than last year, some of which even match Black Friday and holiday pricing for the major brands. So, if you feel like you missed out on Black Friday, don’t worry about it, the TV companies are still digging deep to capture your attention.

When is the best time to buy a TV? Where is the best place to buy a TV? Read more to find out the best time and place to buy a TV. In addition, we give our top favorite places that offer consistently good deals on TVs for online shoppers-some obvious and some not.

      4. B&H Photo
      5. Best Buy
      6. Why not Walmart or Amazon?
    4. What to look for In A New TV
  • The Best Time to Buy A TV

    netflix streaming on tv
The best time to buy a new TV is during Black Friday sales and during Super Bowl season. Black Friday sales started earlier than ever last year, so you can likely count on shopping this year in October through November. If you can’t snag one during Black Friday sales, we also see great deals in January and very early February before the Super Bowl.

The Best Place to Buy A TV

    television
We are obviously huge proponents of shopping online. We find that you can normally get a better deal because of online coupons and the ease of price comparing at home, instead of risking an impulse buy at the store. If you do prefer to purchase your new TV in-store, you can do all your research beforehand (like looking into price-matching policies) and then go to the store armed with all of your information to be sure you’re getting the best deal. If you’re like us and are happy to shop online in the comfort of your own home, a few of our favorite places to buy TVs below are online-only and will definitely end up saving you some cash.

Our Five Favorite Places to Buy a TV Online

    tv gaming
Below are our five favorite retailers to buy a TV online. We wanted to share these with you because some of them are not well-known as TV sellers, but they consistently have great deals and the lowest prices. Click the links at the end of each store description to see any current deals on TVs for each retailer.

    BuyDig

This local New Jersey retailer, BuyDig, may seem small but has a large online presence and is authorized for the major brands that they sell, including Sony, Samsung, and LG. Every month we see prices at their online store that are the “best of the web” for certain models. Brad’s Deals also often works directly with them to create exclusive deals for our readers. Despite being physically on the east coast, they ship nationally for free. Plus, they only charge sales tax in New Jersey, so most online shoppers will save money there, too. See the best TV deals from BuyDig.

    P.C. Richard & Son

If you live in the New York or tri-state area, you’ve probably heard of P.C. Richard & Son. They’ve had a strong local presence in that area for decades. But they also ship TVs nationally, often for free, and they have great deals on the big brands. Their best deals tend to be “hidden,” meaning you have to add it to the cart to see the actual sale price. Often, we’ll see prices that are $50 to $100 less than the competition. The only drawback with this retailer is that some of its national shipping is “curbside” only, which means you have to be home when the TV arrives. Always check the shipping conditions when placing an order. See the best TV deals from P.C. Richard & Son.

    Dell

While it might seem strange that we would recommend Dell, a PC company, as a place to shop for TVs, hear us out. While the selection is not as high as other TV retailers, Dell adds on gift cards with large amounts on them, some as high as $350. For example, this Samsung 55″ 4K Smart TV comes with a $200 gift card. While these cards are for use on Dell’s site only, they sell a good amount of electronics and accessories to make them very useful. With that much free spending cash, you could get a decent soundbar to go with your TV. The card will arrive separately via email and you’d have to wait a week or so to use your card but it’s totally worth it in the end. And the prices for the TVs that come with a card almost always match the lowest prices online for that model. It’s a win-win. See the best TV deals from Dell.

    B&H Photo

The New York retailer, B&H Photo, is well-known in the camera world and has had a very strong catalog business nationally for decades. While they started out in cameras, for many years they have been authorized to sell deals for many computer and consumer electronics brands. They don’t tend to have prices on TVs that beat other retailers, but they often match the lowest prices for the brands that they sell. And because of their strong customer service and free national shipping, we thought they were worth mentioning. They also only charge sales tax in two states, so that may save you some cash, as well. See the best TV deals from B&H Photo.

    Best Buy

Of course, Best Buy seems obvious, and it is, but when it comes to TV shopping it’s hard to beat Best Buy’s pricing on a consistent basis. They almost always have some kind of TV sale going on. It doesn’t mean that they always have the best prices, but if you have a particular model and brand of a TV you want, it’s always a good idea to check and see what Best Buy is selling it for. Also, shipping is free on just about all their TVs, and they have store pick-up in most areas if you need it fast. See the best TV deals from Best Buy.

    Why not Walmart and Amazon?

While both these retailers offer good prices on TVs, they come with baggage. Some of Walmart‘s biggest promotions are for brands that are third-tier and they are the only place that sells them. Those deals might seem incredibly cheap and hard to pass up but will give you exactly what you pay for in the quality department. And the higher-end models pretty much will match the same prices everyone else has.

Amazon is also more often just matching prices with everyone else rather than offering unbeatable deals. And when they do actually beat everyone else, those deals often become the victim of Amazon’s “dynamic pricing” model, which means the price could go back up just hours after you last looked at it. That can make for a very frustrating TV shopping experience. So, while we’re not saying “no” to either of these retailers, they don’t rank in our top five.

What To Look For When Buying A TV

    tv remote
If you’ve been waiting to upgrade to 4K, now is the time. And you if have the room, we recommend 50″ or higher. Go big or go home, right? Other features to look for are high dynamic range, aka HDR, which is a technology that widens or refines the gamut of colors you see on your TV. As for refresh rate, this is where things can get tricky. The biggest discounts will be on 4K TVs that still only offer native 60Hz refresh rates, though many will have “120 technology” that claims to improve motion rates. But this may not be that big of a problem. While native 120Hz is good for fast-moving sports, it makes regular TV look a bit weird (google the term “soap opera effect“) and most turn off that feature half of the time. It’s a highly debated topic among TV aficionados, but it’s probably not as big an issue if your biggest shopping criteria is the price.

The concept of spring cleaning can be overwhelming to some people. After all, it can take a lot of time and effort to clean every single nook and cranny in the house and the back of the garage, and it can get expensive to haul away old furniture or buy the supplies you need to make everything sparkle. But with a bit of careful planning, organization, and some ingenuity, spring cleaning can actually be fun, and doesn’t have to break the bank! Check out our spring cleaning tips in this article.

Spring Cleaning Tips: How to Plan, Save, and Pocket Some Cash

    1. Make your spring cleaning checklist.
    2. Invest in the right spring cleaning supplies.
    3. Where are the best places to shop for spring cleaning supplies?
    4. Get coupons for spring cleaning products.
    5. Buy generic products for spring cleaning.
    6. Stay in the know about spring cleaning product storage.
    7. DIY supplies are your friend.
    8. When you’re done, resell, reuse and recycle.
    9. Think smart and keep cleaning.

    Make your spring cleaning checklist.

    organizer

Before you even attempt to tackle your first cleaning job, make sure you’re mentally prepared to clean in the first place. Sit down. Write up a spring cleaning list for every room or area in your home you want to clean, and map out how long you think each project will take (an hour? A day? A week?), then divide them up into manageable sections.

If you have help in the form of your family or roommates, divvy up tasks so that each person puts in an equal share and no one will have to bear the brunt of the effort. If it’s a team effort it should be a team effort, and organizing it beforehand will help all of you to feel less stressed out by what might otherwise be a daunting task.

Invest in the right spring cleaning supplies.

    vacuum

This likely isn’t your first rodeo. You know what works and what doesn’t. Fad “as seen on TV” products aren’t going to make your cleaning sessions much better. They’re usually expensive, overhyped, and just as good at their jobs as that $0.99 bleach you already have under the sink. Everspring cleaners from Target are popular with a few people on the Brad’s Deals team for having a wide variety of scents and an affordable price.

It might also be tempting to buy that $30 vacuum or that $4 plastic mop. Don’t. You’ll end up spending more money on replacing those shoddy items over and over again than you would if you just invested in a quality item in the first place. Cheap mops don’t absorb water well and will break easily, cheap vacuums clog constantly and rarely last more than six months — less if you have pets. If you’re in the market for a quality new vacuum, check out our deal on the Shark Navigator Upright Vacuum, which is going for $99 at Walmart right now.

Where are the best places to shop for spring cleaning supplies?

    shopping-cart

Buying from warehouse clubs, such as Costco and Sam’s Club allows you to get brand name items by the bulk, and stores like Staples and Amazon will offer deep discounts on cleaning supplies from time to time. Discount retailers like Dollar Tree carry both generic and brand name cleaning items and hardware stores like Home Depot and Menards run specials on a limited number of in-season items, which are sometimes discounted immediately upon checkout, and sometimes require a mail-in-rebate.

Get coupons for spring cleaning products.

    extreme-couponing-cover

Sign up for rewards programs at stores like Walgreens, CVS, and your local grocery chain. These programs are almost always free and award you both printed and electronic coupons on the things in your cart. My trick for not forgetting to use these coupons is simple — I use them right away. Whenever I buy a cleaning product at Walgreens and get a $1 off coupon for that product (or something similar) with my receipt, I immediately go pluck that product off the shelf and buy it with the coupon right away. I know I’ll need to purchase it again eventually, and this way I’m saving money in the long run and saving myself a mad dash to the store when I run out mid cleaning session.

Don’t forget to check Brad’s Deals for new coupon codes and printable coupons every day!

Buy generic products for spring cleaning.

In our opinion, generic is almost always the better choice for springtime cleaning, but there are some generic cleaning products that just don’t pack the same punch as their brand-name counterparts. Here’s how we recommend you decide what to buy:

    • Read product ingredients labels. Checking the ingredients on your product label is an important aspect of comparison shopping. Ingredients are listed in order of predominance, with the first ingredient being the one that has the most weight. Some labels list the exact chemical percentage that is used. If both items have the same ingredient, choosing the least expensive one would be the best choice.
    • Read product manufacturing labels. If two different cleaning products have the same ingredients and place of manufacture, this could mean that they were made in the same factory. Some brands or stores hire a third party to make their items, which is why some cleaning products are manufactured in the same place using the exact same ingredients. The only difference is the packaging.
    • Read consumer product reviews. Do some research by finding out what others have to say about a product you plan on purchasing.  This information can be found on personal blogs, cleaning related websites and forums, and online stores like Amazon or Walmart, which have a customer review section. There are also sites that simply focus on reviewing items and providing helpful articles like Consumer Report, which usually publishes pieces on top-rated cleaning supplies.

Whether generic or brand name, it’s important to think about how often you will use a cleaning product. A multipurpose cleaner that can be used for a variety of projects makes better use of your money than multiple cleaning products that only complete one task. The same idea can be applied to disposable cleaning items where the cost can add up over time. Sticking to reusable items is, as always, a good bet in this case.

Stay in the know about spring cleaning product storage.

    bathroom

Where you store your cleaning products affects how long they will last. If you read the labels on your container, some will approximate the temperature you should have the item kept at or it will have a general phrase about keeping it in a cool or dry place. Read the instructions carefully to determine how to handle these chemicals. Always avoid extreme temperatures and whenever possible, keep the product in the original container to avoid potential mix-ups. Storing these items properly will allow you to reuse them for other projects so you don’t have to replenish your supplies on a constant basis. It’s also important to remember that if you have small children or curious pets, you should be storing your cleaning products in a place where your tiny roommates won’t be able to accidentally ingest or spill them on themselves.

    DIY supplies are your friend.

    vinegar

If you’re on a tight budget, cleaning with the stuff you already have in your cabinets is a great option. Plus, some of these DIY solutions work better than what you may find in a store. If you have hard water stains on your skin faucet, mixing a teaspoon of vinegar and two tablespoons of salt will give you a homemade cleaning solution. Just use a cloth to rub the mixture on the stain and it should come off. Another fun DIY fix it? Get rid of pet hair on your carpet or couch by running a squeegee over it!

You can find many cleaning hack ideas and learn how to concoct homemade cleaning recipes simply by doing a search online. Sites like RealSimple, a women’s lifestyle magazine that focuses on topics such as housekeeping, food, and childcare has a list of useful tips to clean your house with using basic home remedies. You’ll be surprised with what you can do without having to leave the house.

When you’re done, resell, reuse and recycle.

Once your home is squeaky clean, you’ll probably have a pile of things you don’t need, and another pile of things you have yet to decide whether you want to keep. If you need help figuring out which items you should get rid of, we recommend our guide to KonMari, the Japanese tidying-up technique that’s recently taken the world by storm. Once you’ve narrowed down which items you’re looking to toss, it’s time to decide how to get rid of them. Here are your options:

Sell old items. After all, one man’s trash, is another man’s treasure.  Things such as apparel, movies, toys, and more can be sold if priced right.  Just keep the following in mind: know your audience (This will help determine how or where you should resell.), make sure the item you are selling is presentable, and sell items that are in-season (in-demand items can be sold for a higher price). You can publish your items on typical go-to online sites like eBay and Amazon for a small fee or percentage of your profit. Craigslist is free of charge. If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of working with potential buyers, you can sell your clothing, shoes, and handbags to online consignment shops such as thredUP. Their clothing calculator helps give you an estimate of how much they are willing to pay for your items before you send them in. To sell your item, order their Clean Out Bag, which has a free pre-paid shipping label for you to place your items in. ThredUP will offer you up to 80% of the resale value, which you can choose to cash out via PayPal or get thredUP shopping credit.

There are in-store options too, from apparel resale stores like Clothes Mentor and Plato’s Closet to used bookstores like Half-Price along with new and used sporting goods chain Play It Again Sports. At these places, you usually come in with what you would like to sell and they will give you a quote. Sometimes they’ll trade an in-stock item for what you are offering. Some of these stores will give you more money when you opt for an in-store credit instead of cash. Don’t be afraid to ask. Also, even if your item is rejected, don’t hesitate to try another store in a different location since supply and demand vary between places.

If you want to avoid the middle man and selling online, flea markets and garage sales are another option. You and your customer will be able to bargain for what you both believe is the best price for the time. Fees associated vary from a few dollars or more for a booth rental and around $10 for a village garage sale application permit.

Reuse old items. Some people use old socks or shirts to clean the house instead of buying cloths. There are also other ways to be creative with leftover items.  An old pair of pantyhose can get you a no heat curls hairstyle. Simply cut the pantyhose in half, braid it into each side of your hair, and sleep in it overnight.  You can also reuse items for craft projects with kids. Not too long ago, my coworker’s six-year-old daughter created a project for three-year-olds where she turned our dried out classroom markers into puppets.  The markers acted as sticks that were taped onto animals the kids had colored on and cut out.  It was a simple project that required no additional materials and was a blockbuster hit with the kids.

Recycling. Since you’ve already dived full force into spring cleaning, why not save the world while you’re at it? You should already be recycling things like glass, paper, plastic, and metal, but you should also recycle old electronics and batteries.

Plus, when you resell and reuse your old items, you’re also practicing a form of recycling. Donating goods to those less fortunate is another way to reuse items that can directly or indirectly benefit others. Stores set up by nonprofit organizations like Goodwill take your donated items and resell them. The money they make from these sales goes to services and training programs that help disadvantaged people who are looking for employment. You can also try charities run through the church, where your items are given directly to needy families. Some public libraries will even take your old books and resell them during yearly book sales to raise money to fund literacy programs. Schools are another good option, particularly ones in low-income areas where even basic supplies like colored paper and pencils are hard to come by.

    Think smart and keep cleaning.

Spring cleaning shouldn’t be the only time you pick up a broom this year. If you want to save yourself a lot of hassle on next year’s scrubbing sesh, keep your space clean and organized on a daily basis. Mop up spills when they happen, don’t let the dust bunnies pile up under the couch. It might be a little annoying to keep up with, but you’ll thank yourself next spring when you’re not forced to spend a week on your hands and knees pulling out mystery items from underneath the fridge and cursing the day you let that coffee stain seep into the carpet. Clean a little every day, and spring cleaning might not even be necessary next year.
