Celebrating 20 Years of Saving You Money!

Celebrating 20 Years of Saving You Money!

Our Story

Consumers first always, that’s our commitment, and we’ve been saying it for 20 years. This mission began when our founder Brad Wilson, a broke college student, couldn’t believe the outrageous prices at his university bookstore. Thinking there had to be a smarter way, he did the research and found better deals online. While passing out fliers to fellow students in front of the bookstore so they could save money too, Brad had an ‘aha’ moment that sparked our first deal website, Deals Du Jour. Yes, that’s correct, Deals Du Jour was our first name…and a condo in Chicago’s Lincoln Park community housed our first ever headquarters. What started as one grew to five and eventually came to be Brad’s Deals, now located in the River North district with more than 80 employees.

Our Why

This is the passion that drives Brad’s Deals today–teaching yourself to code to build a website, helping people shop smarter as your civic duty, providing an honest voice to cut through the online chaos. Our North Star remains the same to ‘create the consumer advantage’, and not just with deals. It’s real people, really helping you save money in all areas of your life and sharing advice from day-to-day experiences to protecting you online. Everything we do is backed by our core values:

#1. Consumers first, always. Our relentless commitment to provide value and transparency to consumers is fundamental to who we are, and we nurture that trust every day in every decision we make.

#2. Love what you do. Our tenacious work ethic, competitive spirit, and holistic approach to wellness produces a fun, innovative, healthy, and rewarding environment.

#3. Keep it real. From our brand to our culture, we believe in authenticity, visibility, and honest communication.

#4. Exceptional together. Open collaboration and a commitment to empower consumers drives our passion to create value that only we can deliver.

#5. Challenge the ordinary. We are guided by an entrepreneurial spirit to grow, innovate, be what’s next, and be the best at what we do.

#6. Embrace diversity. In our workplace, in our products, in our views. We are genuinely committed to an environment where unique talents, backgrounds, abilities, and experiences make us better together.

Some things we’re most proud of (plus being 20 years old!)

  • Saving consumers money, of course. We might shop a little on the job too, because how couldn’t we! Beyond the excitement of finding the best prices ever, it’s rewarding to get to know our users and hear how we helped them find that hard-to-get gift, budget better for their family, or save on a vacation. It’s all about connection and hearing each other’s stories, which led us to our first podcast, Frugal Living. It’s a fun way to hear interviews and stories about smart savings hacks and financial tips.
  • Giving back, and more than just great deals. Community, the common good, helping others–whether it’s through women and youth tech mentorship programs or donating blankets to homeless shelters, it’s an important piece of our culture. We also incorporate giving back into our well-being events like making paracords for our troops, volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House, or virtual volunteering in 2020 by making chew toys at home for the Anti-Cruelty Society and writing cards for hospitalized kids. A big thank you to our online community that came together in 2017, helping donate to Brad’s Deals Cares Foundation that raised money for Hurricane Irma and Maria in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where our other headquarters resides. This reminds us all, ‘Your greatness is not what you have, it’s what you give.’
  • Making ideas happen for women entrepreneurs. Although this is a mentorship program, it’s so much more and deserves its own accolades. Since 2016, with the exception of last year, we have hosted our very own in-house Women’s Tech Accelerator. We choose women-owned startups ripe for growth, and they receive access to our resources, free office space for a year (snacks, lunch-and learns, and events included!) and the ability to collaborate with our employees as subject matter experts. Giving back to help others move forward on their dreams is where we started on that college campus.
  • Driving change & honest conversations. Because our differences make us better together, we knew it was our responsibility to reevaluate the driving forces of our core value ’embrace diversity.’ Through that lens, we created Brad’s Mosaic, an employee-led team dedicated to creating a more diverse, equal, and inclusive environment. Our mission challenges us to reduce harm and stand up to injustice. Within our own walls, we’re starting with education, diversity events and celebrations, diversity-focused hiring and processes, and in the products we deliver. We also created our first diversity, equity and inclusion report to remain transparent and help us evolve as a company because we’re not stopping there.
  • Advocating for all types of businesses & shoppers. From big to small, we need to be a safe place for businesses to be seen and for consumers to find what they want. We developed our own platform, Axis, that works with small businesses too. As this past year really shed light on the importance of supporting local and underrepresented businesses, we launched our Loving the Locals program. From there, we created the ALL Shop representing local, black-owned, Asian-American-Pacific-Islanders-owned, women-owned, LGTBQ+-owned, eco-friendly, and other diverse businesses. Our goal is to continue growing inclusivity for all shoppers and businesses.
  • Our ‘brand’ new look. In 2019, we got a makeover. We want our consumers to have a welcoming, easy, and fun experience. Our new look screams, ‘let’s have conversations with real people and save money!’ Look closely and you’ll see a shopping tag in our apostrophe representing our innovative and unique approach to retail.
  • Awards (not in a bragging way, but in a ‘this is a great place to work’ way) These awards really speak to our employees, leadership team, and the service we provide that we all truly believe in. From many local Chicago awards to nationally recognized awards like Best & Brightest to Work, Best & Brightest in Wellness, Great Place to Work, Inspiring Workplaces, and Forbes America’s Most Promising Companies. A pat on the back is always nice, but building a culture employees want to be a part of and a service consumers rely on is what it’s all about.
  • Going green…and hey it’s in our logo. We’ve always been intentional about supporting less waste as a company with different things like welcoming new employees with mugs and water bottles, group recycling for old electronics, gifting employees stainless steel straws, beach cleanup volunteering, eliminating plastic plates and utensils, and launching a composting program when we get back to the office. And drum roll please…we are so very proud to announce we are a Carbon Neutral certified company! This means we’re taking action on climate change to reduce our carbon footprint. Since our service impacts shipping pollution, we are supporting efforts to prevent deforestation and emission reduction in the Amazonian Rainforest, one of the world’s most biodiverse habitats. It also aids in sustainable development benefits like no poverty, zero hunger, good health and wellbeing, and protecting endangered species.
  • Creating the safest place to shop on Earth. This is our new tagline, and we stand behind it. Every single one of us. Bottom line is you never have to question the integrity of the store, the quality of the deal, or the security of online shopping. We like to say, ‘Add Brad’ for that human touch and peace of mind you’ll only find here.

…And let’s not forget this challenging year.

We all really came together during a time of great uncertainty and unprecedented change due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our team remained stronger than ever to stay connected and do our part as we all looked for solutions and adjusted to new norms. From protecting shoppers from fraudulent activity, price gouging, and misinformation to covering important topics as it relates to the pandemic, our goal is always to help you navigate smart and safe online shopping.

Saving the best for last–YOU!

To the best consumers around, all of our amazing partners and stores, and our loyal employees–thanks for being our better half! Because of you, we’ve hit milestones, celebrated good times, got through the tough ones, saved money, and became better together. So what’s next? As we pause to celebrate where we’ve been, we’re looking forward to 20 more trips around the sun. Thanks for trusting us to deliver the best savings, and get ready for big things on the horizon.

To some, it’s an anniversary. To us, it’s a big deal-iversary. Thanks for saving with us for 20 years and being a part of the safest place to shop on Earth! Some numbers we think are pretty cool:

  • 80+ employees

Just 100 Days Until Black Friday 2021

Just 100 Days Until Black Friday 2021

Much to our disbelief, time is quickly moving forward in 2021. As surprising as it may seem, as of today, there are only 100 days left until Black Friday! But don’t worry, we’re here to help. As you start to prepare for your best holiday ever, make sure to add Brad. We’ll guide you through a new Black Friday shopping experience. And as other sources have reported, with the prediction of another Amazon sale in October (with prices similar to June’s Prime Day), we’re expecting to see sales even earlier than ever.

Amazon Sale Predicted for October

prime day amazon blog logo

Amazon held their Prime Day in June this year, but sources are predicting that the retailer will have a major sale similar to Prime Day in October. October is normally when we start to hear the first rumors of Black Friday sales, and sometimes we even see early Black Friday ads released. A sale from Amazon in October would essentially be competing for the same Black Friday dollars as other big-name retailers, including Walmart and Target. We expect to see some of these other retailers start their Black Friday sales earlier than ever before to compete as well.

Last year, when Prime Day took place in October, we saw hundreds of thousands of items included in the event with products from every conceivable category. This year, we are likely to see the best prices of the year for Amazon-brand tech products like Fire TV sticks and Echo speakers. Because of the timing in October, we anticipate seeing a bigger focus on giftable items, which typically aren’t featured heavily on Prime Day.

Black Friday Ads

In 2020, there were some changes to the timing and format of Black Friday ads compared to 2019 and the years prior. For the first time, we saw ads from major retailers being released as early as mid-October, whereas in 2019, we didn’t see much until Kohl’s was the first to release their Black Friday ad on November 1. Last year, we also saw a departure from one massive catalog to multiple smaller ads for sales that spanned a few weeks. For example, Walmart announced not one, but three Black Friday events collectively called “Black Friday Deals for Days”, which were individual sales spread out over the course of November. This year, we expect that these same retailers, in addition to Target, Best Buy, and Macy’s, will release their ads even earlier to compete with the enormous sales event that Amazon is predicted to have.

We’ll share all of the ad releases and store updates as soon as we hear, so keep an eye on our Black Friday page. We’ll upload ads as they come out, post our analysis of the big retailers’ ads on our blog, and help you figure out which deals are worth your time and money (and which ones aren’t).

Thanksgiving and Black Friday Store Hours

store closed sign

Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and Kohl’s have already announced that they will be closed for Thanksgiving this year. We have not yet heard what their store hours will be on November 26 for Black Friday, but as soon as they are released, we will be letting you know. While we do predict to see more people shopping in stores this autumn, expect many big sales and doorbusters to be online again this year (and you can bet we’ll find and share the best deals!).

For a full list of stores closed on Thanksgiving, you can view our blog post. We will keep you updated on news about Black Friday store hours as we learn more.

Black Friday Deal Predictions

women holding a black Friday circular

We’ve mentioned before, we see a lot of similar Black Friday deals every year. This year is expected to be no different. You’ll continue to find deals on Kitchen Aid Mixers, women’s boots, winter jackets, small kitchen appliances, and all your other annual favorites.

Per our Black Friday deals expert and Managing Editor Casey, we expect to also see Instant Pots around $60, Dyson vacuums under $200, and big savings on apparel from North Face, Under Armour, and Columbia.

Black Friday Shopping Tips

Add Brad.

We have a real team of experts working diligently to find you the best deals every day, and we work twice as hard to sort through the clutter during Black Friday. You can trust that our deals are well researched and vetted. Add Brad’s Deals to your holiday shopping strategy for news and predictions, gift ideas, early Black Friday Values, and finding what’s on your list for less.

You can download our shopping app so you know you’re getting the lowest price possible, stay on top of deals as they are released, and let us do the work for you. Brad’s Deals will be covering Amazon major sales event, all of the best competing sales, and of course, top Black Friday deals from Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and more.

Shop early.

One of the best pieces of advice we can give you this year is to plan ahead and get started early. No one can tell when supply chain interruptions might happen, so you’re going to want to place orders early to allow plenty of time for shipping, especially when it comes to Christmas gifts. We will do our best to let you know of shipping cutoffs. And if you’re going after a specific color or size, be aware that sellouts can happen quickly, especially for the most popular options. This year, the wisest thing you can do is shop earlier rather than later.

Know your shopping options.

Online shopping is still expected to be the most popular way to shop this season, even as more and more people are heading back into stores. Another option to consider that we think will be very popular this year is to pick up your order in store or at the curbside. Almost all major retailers are now offering free curbside pickup at your local store, which is a great option if you need to get gifts quickly or are just looking to avoid long shipping times.

Sign up for newsletters.

Hopefully, you’ve already signed up for the Brad’s Deals newsletter so you can receive the best Black Friday deals and news every day. You may also want to consider signing up for emails from your favorite Black Friday retailers. They’ll no doubt share their best deals with their email subscribers, and you’ll get a heads up on their plan for Black Friday hours and doorbusters.

Download mobile apps.

Comparison shopping is going to be a big deal this year. Too often we see people trust that Amazon will have the lowest price, but that is not always the case. Download store apps to take advantage of easy price comparisons, quick checkouts, and mobile coupons.

Shop safely.

Black Friday is the ideal time for scammers with non-legitimate websites and inauthentic products to try to take advantage of you. Be vigilant and don’t buy anything from a website that does not look trustworthy or safe. Know that Brad’s Deals is the Safest Place to Shop on Earth and we only feature trustworthy deals and retailers after doing the research upfront for you. Some red flags to be aware of:

  • No contact or customer service information
  • No social media pages
  • Blurry homepage photos and typos in website text
  • PayPal only payment options

If you aren’t sure about a website or a deal, please reach out to us and ask! Even if you didn’t find them through our website, we’re more than happy to check out a website for you and let you know if it’s legitimate or if you should avoid it.

Have Fun.

Lastly, as we’ve all learned, the most important thing you can do is take time to enjoy the magic of the season. From planning your holiday to finding the best gifts for your loved ones, make sure you have fun and take time to reflect on what’s important to you. Just know, our members are like our family, and we’re here to help you prepare for the season easily, safely, and on your budget.

Shop Online Eyewear

Shop Online Eyewear

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

If you need glasses, you might start with your local optometrist; however, a quick look at the prices in the office will quickly lead to sticker shock. Fortunately, there is a way for you to save money on your glasses if you decide to buy them online. At the same time, it can be a challenge to purchase classes online if you cannot physically hold them, try them on, and make sure they work. How can you make sure you get a quality pair of glasses without breaking the bank? Take a look at several important points below.

In this post we’ll cover:

  • You’ll Need a Prescription To Get Glasses Online
  • Make Sure Your Glass Will Fit by Knowing Your Measurements
  • Do Your Research on the Eyewear Brand
  • Certain Add-Ons Can Make Your Glasses More Expensive
  • Keep Up with the Latest Deals for Glasses Online
  • You’ll Need a Prescription To Get Glasses Online

Before you can order eyewear online, you need to figure out what your prescription is. If you do not have a prescription, you will have a difficult time getting glasses that will correct your vision adequately. Therefore, visit your optometrist before you get prescription glasses online.

After your exam is finished, your eye doctor is legally required to provide you with a free copy of your prescription. That way, you can get your glasses anywhere you choose.

Before you pay for an eye exam out of pocket, check to see if your health insurance or vision insurance will cover your eye exams. Some of these policies will also cover the cost of purchasing classes, even if you purchase them online from one of the leading brands, such as GlassesUSA.

Make Sure Your Glass Will Fit by Knowing Your Measurements

Next, you must make sure your glasses fit by keeping up with your measurements. When you take a look at glasses that are provided by brands such as Warby Parker, you will see a lot of measurements listed. This is how you make sure your glasses fit.

The measurements you need to know include:

  • The width of the lens
  • The width of the bridge
  • The length of the arms
  • If you have an older pair of glasses at home, you can take a look at the measurements on those frames. That way, you can pick the same measurement when you get a new pair.

You also need to make sure the lenses will be centered on your pupils, so know your pupillary distance (PD).

This is usually included in your prescription.

Do Your Research on the Eyewear Brand

Similar to purchasing any other product or service, you should do your research on the quality of the brand.

Take a look at a few reviews and ratings to see what other people have to say about their glasses. For example, you may want to explore a few reviews on Eyeglasses.com to learn more about whether that brand is right for you.

Pay attention to the details. That way, you can identify which reviews are real and which reviews are fake. You need to find glasses that will adequately correct your vision, are easy to take care of, and will last a long time.

Certain Add-Ons Can Make Your Glasses More Expensive

Finally, even though purchasing glasses online from certain sites, such as Zenni Optical, can be a way to save money, there are additional features that might make your glasses more expensive. A few examples include:

  • An auto-reflective coating can reduce glare but will add a few dollars to your purchase
  • An oleophobic coating makes your glasses resistant to oils but could make your glasses more expensive
  • A scratch-resistant coating makes your glasses more durable but does not make them immune to scratches
  • A blue light filter can be helpful if you spend time in front of screens but can be pricey
Shop around and take a look at how expensive these add-ons are. That way, you can get the best deal possible.
  • Keep Up with the Latest Deals for Glasses Online

If you are looking for the latest deals, promo codes and shopping tips, be sure to check out these offers from leading online eyewear retailers here.

The Best Things to Buy in August 2021

The Best Things to Buy in August 2021

August is what some call the Sunday of summer. But don’t worry, we’re here to help you find the best money-saving deals that will certainly help you get through these dog days of summer. Check out our list below to find out how your dollar can be stretched the furthest this month.

    Back-to-School Supplies

Although many school supply lists are available to parents before their kiddos even begin summer break, August is the month retailers really get the ball rolling. It’s by far the best time to stock up on everything from backpacks, notebooks, lunch bags, and kids’ apparel and uniforms. Some of the best stores for which we currently have back-to-school deals include Staples, Kohl’sWalmart, and Amazon.

And don’t forget, back to school sales can be for everybody. Even if you’re child-free or your kids are beyond the school-age years, now is the time to catch a great deal on office supplies, twin bedding, storage containers, and compact appliances. Look out especially for the sales promoting college- or dorm-related items. Check out our collection of the best back-to-school deals for more ideas.

    Laptops

Just like bedding and appliances, even if you’re not sending someone off to school, this is a good time to buy if you’re looking to replace your old, slow laptop. Retailers like Best Buy, Dell, and HP are great places to get deals on laptops right now, and Apple’s free AirPods with the purchase of a Mac deal for students, parents, and educators is worth a look as well. And if tech-savvy is not something you’ve ever been accused of, check out our blog post on what to look for in a laptop for your school-bound kids.

    Warm-Weather Apparel

In order to make room for their cold-weather couture, retailers are often selling their summer stock at a fraction of the cost. Some of your best bets include swimwear, summer dresses, and sandals. So even if summer is winding down, if you have plans for a beachy vacation this winter, now’s the time to buy your getaway gear. Check out this selection of recent deals from Macy’s, JCPenney, and Under Armour.

    Summer Outdoor Essentials

Even if you feel like time is running out to enjoy a new patio set or to break in new gardening tools, it would still be wise to invest now while the deals are hot. That way you’ll be ready to go the first day the temps rise above 60 degrees come next spring. Other summer essentials getting their prices slashed? Outdoor planters, outdoor rugs, and patio umbrellas. Take a look at these deals from Wayfair, Overstock, and Best Choice Products.

    Labor Day Sales

We know, we know, Labor Day is in September. But like with most holidays, retailers get their big sales started sometimes well before the actual holiday. Keep an eye out for early Labor Day sales to start during the last week of August.

What deals do you always look for in August? Let us know in the comments below. Happy shopping!

6 Best Places to Find Deals on Patagonia Fleece, Jackets, and More

6 Best Places to Find Deals on Patagonia Fleece, Jackets, and More

Patagonia is one of the most popular high-quality lifestyle brands on the planet, but that quality often comes with a hefty price tag. Good news everyone – finding great deals on Patagonia jackets, fleece, and gear is easier than you think!

We’ve rounded up a few of our favorite sources for cheap Patagonia below, but if you’d rather let the best Patagonia deals come to you, just set up a Deal Alert for Patagonia and we’ll send you a note whenever we find something great.

man standing with a Patagonia backpack

The 6 Best Places to Buy Patagonia on Sale

    Patagonia

Our number one pick for finding great deals on Patagonia jackets and gear is… Patagonia! It shouldn’t come as a surprise that buying directly from the brand is a solid way to find a deal. Check out the Web Specials section to find Patagonia’s sale items. Added bonus: you never have to wonder if it’s authentic.

    Backcountry

We’re constantly finding Patagonia on sale at Backcountry, an authorized reseller for many top outdoor lifestyle brands. You’ll find everything from fleece pullovers to down parkas here.

    Steep & Cheap

If you like buying your Patagonia on clearance, check out Steep & Cheap, the outlet store for Backcountry. This is a last call situation so colors and sizes are sometimes limited, but the bargains really can’t be beat.

    REI

REI’s reputation leans more towards a premium outdoors lifestyle, but they’ve still got clearance racks, and Patagonia often finds its way onto them. REI is especially worth a look in November. They famously don’t participate in Black Friday, but that just means they’re holding comparable sales on other days that month.

    Mountain Steals

Another great store to snag Patagonia on sale is Mountain Steals, where we’ve seen plenty of Patagonia bargains over the years. One recent deal for 50% off Patagonia knocked the price of some jackets down to less $50!

    Amazon

The last great place on our list for finding Patagonia on sale is Amazon. Different sizes and colors may be offered at different prices, but you can usually find what you are looking for by filtering through on Amazon.

Do you know of any other Patagonia deals? Let us know in the comments below.
